Situation: You and your team are challenged to build a straw structure that is better than the rest! The structure you build will hold a container with a growing load. The structure that weighs the least and holds the greatest load will be the winner!
Problem: The problem you must solve involves the following criteria:
1) You can use UP TO 20 straws and 2 m of masking tape
2) You cannot add any other materials
3) The structure must hold the designated container with a base diameter of ______cm at least 10 cm from the table
4) You cannot tape the structure to the table. It must be free standing.
5) You must complete this task within the specified time frame.
6) You must include at least ONE idea sketch from each member of the team, and ONE good copy sketch of the design you and the team decide to build before you get your materials.
Investigation: Research for inspiration and ideas!
Construction: BUILD!!!!! (show your drawings to Ms. Ang in order to get your supplies!)
Evaluation: Lets test out your structures on the following dates: 7A_______________ 7B______________ 7/8 ________________
REFLECT and THINK about your results: With your group, discuss what the strengths and weaknesses of your structure were. Which structures in the class were better than yours? What do you think you would do if you could rebuild the structure all over again?
During the next few weeks, we will learn more about what makes a good strong structure and we will try this challenge again!
