A SYSTEM is basically a group of things put together in a way that helps to solve problems. Each part or COMPONENT in a system plays an important role, no matter how small it may seem. For example, a bus is a system. It solves the problem of transporting many people at once on the ground. It is made up of metal parts, wheels, seat belts, mirrors, glass etc... Every single part of that bus plays a vital (important) role. Even the smallest, seemingly insignificant screw is important.
Systems can be divided into different categories. One way is to categorize them into MECHANICAL and NON-MECHANICAL SYSTEMS. A Mechanical System is like the bus example. You can touch it and see it. It has physical parts/components. A Non-mechanical System is a system that you cannot touch or see. It does NOT have physical parts/components. A non-mechanical system is made up of ideas. For example: Bus Schedules.
Although you can read a bus schedule on a board, the schedule is an idea or concept. The board that you read it on, only helps to communicate these ideas. The bus schedule cannot be touched or seen.
Another example:
Health Care: Mechanical parts of the system include the doctors, hospitals, ambulances, nurses, medical equipment. Non-mechanical parts of the system include the steps used by doctors to help someone in need, medical insurance that is used to pay for the services, the knowledge that doctors have and how they manage that knowledge.
