In this unit of Science & Technology, we will be focusing on Mechanical Systems. Machines. To start we need to understand some of the basics as machines are simply physical systems that help us to solve problems.
If you think back to grade 5 when you learned about Egypt or the Mayans, or the Ancient Chinese you may recall images of hundreds of men having to find ways to haul/carry large heavy stone from incredible distances. How did they achieve such feats without the use of the cranes and excavators we know of today? Even before this time, humans investigated and experimented with what they had in order to figure out ways to move and lift things so that they could use them for building shelter, or for bringing heavy items with them when they had to look for an area with better conditions for survival.
What do these needs have in common?
The basic purpose of pushing or pulling something a certain distance. In other words, machines used to exert a FORCE on an object that we will call a LOAD, and moving that LOAD a DISTANCE.
Sound familiar??? Using FORCE to move a DISTANCE??
That's right! That's WORK!!!
By the end of this unit, you will have a good understanding of how we can manipulate simple machines to help us do WORK.
